“Riverboat Blues”, Graham Hunt – All praise and due respect to Beck, who was long overdue for Odelay’s seeds to sprout. The mix of breakbeats, trailer park grooves, and spaced-out wah goes back to the moments when indie was just crossing over to majors.

“I Just Can’t Get Over Losing You”, The Lemon Twigs – Impeccable pastiche can be bloodless and suffocating, slavishly in thrall to its own curatorial practice; Yet the Twigs somehow break out of the museum with real yearning pouring from their mastered craft.

“Home Depot”, Medium Build – h/t PW. It can be scary and painful to feel the pinprick that punctures the fortress facade of masculinity. And maybe it isn’t fair to expect those liberated to see it as anything more than a prison until it’s far in the rearview; But then again, “can’t call it drunk driving if you ain’t driving very far.”

“BOSS TRIX (BENNY’S SONG)”, Nirosta Steel – ”Please don’t shake that thing until you’re next to me again”; the possessive and romantic longing across the dancefloor, with its disco stabs and shimmering tambourines, is equal parts fear and joy, all vitality. 

“Danceteria”, Madonna – This is how you do it. Through vividness alone, Madge makes her treasured memories into a shimmering present. Every reference - a little “Vogue” rollcall - makes her cooler and her bonafides fresher. Googling every name you don’t know is such a treat.

“”, – Not knowing how this email platform will handle Kieren Hebden (typically known as Four Tet)’s decision to render this nom de plume and track titles in wingdings, I’m leaving it blank, and leave it without introduction too. Access it without any pretense.

“The Fruits of Conquest”, The Strokes – Still finding more fodder from New York in the late 1970s, Casablancas & Co. tap into some grimy Some Girls era funk. But where the Glimmer Twins sashayed to Studio 54 alongside Bianca’s steed, the Strokes skulk in a back alley, fighting back a bad trip (“I’m a leech!”)

“One Time”, Wiki – A lovely ear for beats and endless ear-catching quotes (“The passion ceased for a second, but I had to grind”) make Wiki one of the most enduring and tasteful rappers today, a retro figure keeping his style current.

“Real Here Now”, Nick Hakim – Hakim’s voice is beautiful, but a special shout out to Dylin Day’s slide guitar and Jake Sherman’s synth work, which imbue this ballad with an almost heartbreaking nostalgia fit for Maxwell or D’Angelo.

“All E-Lone”, Ruth Garbus – Garbus picked a beautiful and muted palette for this record, something between Nala Sinephro, Pharoah Sanders, and Floating Points’s mellower mode. Her harmonic movement is careful yet consistently surprising.
