Ten Songs for May, 2 0 2 6 | Listen to these songs on Spotify and YouTube

“Happy Today”, Jeff Parker, ETA IVtet, Anna Butterss, Jay Bellerose, and Josh Johnson – Beginning in tranquil suspension, Parker’s group achieves motorik magic nearly ten minutes into this piece. A masterclass in the relationship between patience and decisiveness as meditative as it is ultimately energetic.

“SAME SH!T”, Isaiah Rashad – Quite clearly one of the most tasteful rappers working today. Rashad may break no new ground, but his choices are second-to-none. Flows, lyrics, vocal tone, beats, structure… it’s a pleasure to watch him work.

“Beatback”, Fcukers – New York is as alive right now as any time in my memory, and few groups represent its intoxicating relationship between hype and coolness like Shanny Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis. This music feels like rolling through a bodega after midnight on your way to the next thing.

“On Call”, MUNA – This is a big banger here, starting with the stadium-scale drums and blooming fully by the chorus, modulating to brighten the whole song up. This new take on the classic booty call anthem is all eagerness and fun. “I’ll make myself real available!”

“Heated”, Jill Ryan – Cloudy synths part for Ryan, whose ennui and heartbreak break through like a glaring sun in a white sky. The chorus hits like a realization that no amount of negotiation or pleading will unbreak what’s broken.

“Never Know”, Paul McCartney – Taped, as is tradition, on the old four-track recorders at Abbey Road, Macca conjures some of his spooky old ghosts and best creative work on Dungeon Lane. Listen, in particular, to how good the drums sound here.

“Baby Don’t Hurt Me”, Emma Ogier – Already one of my most-played songs to come out in 2026. This song feels so much shorter than its nearly-four minutes and is so easy to take down again and again. What judicious use of samples (and maybe scratching?)

“In the Middle of It”, Hiss Golden Messenger – MC Taylor has been in a heartland groove for years now with no good reason to stop now. The details are fun to take in: The unstoppable, locomotive drums, endless riffing on lead in the right channel, call-and-response backing vocals.

“Lonesome Dove”, Charley Crockett – Crockett has a metric ton of music out, all of it faithful pastiche in swaggering baritone. But what’s wrong with a singer who knows what’s fun about the past? Saunter into a bar with ole CC and have a whiskey.

“San Francisco”, Aldous Harding – Already a rather neptunian and hushed song at the start, Harding’s interlude around 50 seconds in takes this song to interstellar space and then somehow back again. An incredibly unique songwriter and recording artist.
