“Overdog”, Star Moles – An early contender for album of the year. Genuinely very hard to pick a favorite song, but if you like this, check out “The End”, “Real Magic”, “Skip the Party”, and/or “Halo”. Magic, humor, delight everywhere, sounding like the best demos ever lost.

“Headphones”, Otracami – Camila Ortiz cuts the line between modern pop music and ambient folk, music that both bangs and seems locked in its own terminal introspection. Each lyric reads like a memory, even though they seem to be transpiring in real time. Here, but not.

“Tractor Beam”, Snail Mail – That turn-of-the-millennium, CD-quality, plasticky-synth-strings, breakbeats-under-shoegaze sound has been cooking in the culture for quite some time now, but Erin Jordan is one of the few cool enough to make the sound stay fresh.

“Stupid Bitches”, Grace Ives – Another example, albeit closer to the Moby zone (complimentary). Ives has a strong voice; expressive and muscular. She doesn’t box it in, sounding like an ascendant stadium star irrespective of her current station.

“One Stop”, Aldous Harding – One great pleasure of listening to Harding’s music all these years is waiting for the moment when her singular strangeness peeks out. Here it might be “Why wouldn’t I wanna meet ya?” at the end of the first voice, curving upward like a knowing smirk.

“If You Change”, Widowspeak – The La’s, Jesus and Mary Chain, Belle and Sebastian… I won’t embarrass this band with further framing references, but the generation who heard the Byrds and imagined how beautiful an electric 12-string could sound under a desultory vocal.

“ZIELLO”, Claire Ozmun – A beautiful, strange album, full of questioning moments, dark little corners, clouds passing over the sun, shadowed faces. Ozmun’s doubts center on human nature itself: “There is no center, no focal point, no power, or alliance.”

“Warning”, Cameron Winter – It’s amazing how much of Thom Yorke’s 2000s spirit Winter has picked up. Not that he’s cribbing from Hail to the Thief, but like there was a psychic strain he plugged into, then wove with “Masters of War”, then connected to the depredations of the Trump administrations.

“Minty”, MIKE and SURF GANG – SURF GANG presided over a double album, split between MIKE on the first half and Earl Sweatshirt on the second. The two rappers feed off one anothers’ inspiration, united by a single production school.

“Rent”, Eric Gabriel – Joined by an incredible squad of Hand Habits, Adam Brisbin, Sean Mullins, and Dandy McDowell, Gabriel coasts effortlessly over a woolly, jagged riff, as tight as it is serrated.
