“Streets of Minneapolis”, Bruce Springsteen – Lyrics so fresh, it sounds like he’s reading them. Bruce might not have had anything to fight for in the Obama years, but with Trump now threatening him directly, the rage in his belly is righteous. He has a reason to write again.

“Tastee”, Pat Kelly – A melody I haven’t been able to get out of my head since I first heard it. Pat Kelly’s music has always been as pained as it is dryly droll, like “the rehab center behind the Tastee-Freez”; Joy and humor in the shadow of decline and decay. He’s one of the best writers out there.

“Dead End”, Snail Mail – Lindsey Jordan is cool. A real rock star from an old mold where being sexy and powerful isn’t putting yourself out there too much or being cringe. Even the singalong outro feels assertive of a way songs used to go that are welcome back now.

“Silent Century”, Jackie West – Recorded in a house upstate, the whole album done in a week. You can hear the closeness and familiarity, the warmth and the intimacy, the things that can’t quite be said out loud, or in public

“Site Unseen”, Courtney Barnett and Waxahatchee – Barnett has been gone for a minute; five years specifically. But maybe she didn’t expect that: “I know it seems a lot, it’s only for a year”. And maybe she leaned in: “And if we like it here, we’ll stay another year.” Seems she did!

“The World, So Madly”, Ratboys – However heavy her band gets, Julia Steiner’s beatific and clear voice carries her crystalline melodies straight to the space between your eyes, lodging them there indefinitely. 

“Talk to Me”, Robyn – Robyn is the high priestess of the church of coitus and longing. “Talk to me ‘til I’ve arrived”, she commands, dictating the gospel of phone sex. Reaching over the gap of what she can’t have – from “Dancing On My Own” to this – is her endless well of intolerable ecstasy.

“PLAYA”, A$AP Rocky – Rakim Mayers does not have to make albums that satisfy his fans anymore, but unfortunately he seems to still want to try. His worst stuff is high-concept and overthought; his best (like this) is relaxed, fun, reliant on his impeccable taste and charisma.

“First Light”, E L U C I D and Sebb Bash – Drumless, eerie, riddled with pointillistic ghost notes and high harmonics; E L U C I D has mined many a mood in Armand Hammer but finds new terrain here, far beyond the pale.

“Hit My Head All Day”, Dry Cleaning – The formula hasn’t changed that much: Real grooves, chaotic guitars, and the driest possible vocal performances from Florence Shaw, who sounds either like her facial muscles are medically paralyzed and she’s somehow broadcasting her inner monologue. Delightful.
