The story of “FEAR OF CHOKING”
I am so excited to announce my third and final single from A Hat Upon the Bed: It’s called “Fear of Choking”. Listen to it anywhere here.
And wow. The full album is out Friday!! That is insane. Pre-order an LP here!
A Hat Upon the Bed deals with a darkness I feared showing. I learned over time that if this darkness doesn’t first find a way to express itself, it hangs around until it leaks from unexpected places. “Fear of Choking” is my tribute to one leakage: Intrusive thoughts. Shocking, sudden, gruesome visions that hit at the most vulnerable moments, like trying to fall asleep or doing the dishes. We all get them. I thought it would be funny to write a bouncy, fun song about the myriad ways my imagination proposed I be grievously injured or killed. A horror comedy to turn the experience on its head.
This song is, to me, Jason Burger’s highlight on the album. He plays both kit and percussion and laid a very tight groove with just the right amount of cheeky fills to push it along. I also love the way Winston Cook-Wilson and Andrew Daly Frank weave in and out in their lead playing.
