The story of Country Life in America
I’m so excited to announce my second album, “Country Life in America”, is out everywhere today. Please buy the physical LP here and stream it here.
“Country Life in America” was a home and garden magazine from the turn of the 20th century. Growing up, my grandmother had a framed copy from 1905 in her home. Its cover is an assemblage of butterflies, collected like a naturalist might for display in an exhibit about the beauty of the genus. That framed cover was leaned up against the wall in the garage behind my dad’s house where I spent hours after college graduation trying to spin songs from my guitar.
To me, this music similarly exemplifies a form I love and studied. Its celebration of these varied styles feels to me like a lost catalog of homespun delights. Finishing and recording these songs now, I have the privileged vantage point of identifying with their conflicts and struggles, while having distance and being the voice I might have wanted in my head when I wrote them. I can take in its triumphs too: finding love, finding out how to sing about it, finding out that’s what it’s all about.
I want to thank Mom, Caroline, Peter Walker, Davey, and Lisa. My wedding band: Ian Wayne, Andrew Daly Frank, Winston Cook-Wilson, and Pat Kelly. Thank you Paulina Mandeville, Andres Matlock, and Jorg. To Matt Lipkins for a lifetime of musical inspiration. Thank you Jason Burger for last-minute percussion and Nico Hedley for help with engineering. Thanks to Nate Mendelsohn for excellent mixing, Carl Saff for mastering, Sam Shapiro for photos, and Jules Evens for design. Most of all, to Emma.
In loving memory of Dad and Ludo.
