Ten Songs for July, 2 0 2 4 | Listen to these songs on Spotify and YouTube

“If Bells Could Sing”, Georgia Denham – It’s the subtle, fleeting moments of harmony in this trio piece that reveal its profundity: quartal harmony, quiescent pauses, like wind passing through spare trees in the last days before spring.

“Rain”, Sam Wilkes, Dylan Day, and Craig Weinrib – There’s the sound of the Sahel in the restraint of these three jazz musicians. By leaving so much space, and leaving sounds to stick in the air, they invoke a place where things are far apart, where a note might hang and hang as long as the breezes keep it aloft.

“Chestnut”, Scree – After a temporary introductory flurry, Scree let Jason Burger’s load-bearing backbeat push into a kind of lurching funk, contoured by Ryan El-Solh’s shadowed guitar voicings and Carmen Quill’s thumping lines. Brief, but potent.

“The Path”, Total Blue – The sound (a period of ECM, or John Hassell, or Joni Mitchell’s VG-8) when the emergence of synthesizers and electronic drums revealed a futurism of virtual spaces that obviated live instruments and suggested mystery in their inhuman ambiguity.

“Satellite Business”, Sampha and Little Simz – Sampha’s work is marked, as much by his voice, by his unique harmonic predilections, established here early before disappearing into implication as driving drums and bass overtake it. No one knows him like the piano.

“Unfortunate”, Tems – Not every track on the Nigerian’s latest album reads as the afrobeat she has served as the face of over the last few years. This track might have belonged to Amber Mark; laid-back R&B, grooving over angelic harmonies.

“Glory of the Snow”, Clairo – Charm has some of the sophisticated songwriting that Nilsson and Elton specialized in five decades ago, but with the dusty aesthetic veneer of Stereolab, and the whispered intimation of the indieworld Cottrill emerged from back in 2017.

“Counting Dog”, Shugo Tokumaru – h/t PW. Sounding a bit like a journey through a cartoon woodland, this proggy thicket of friendly melodies and chaotic noise rings like Beirut, Battles, and the Broadway adaptation of Illinois! went adventuring together. So fun.

“Scooter Blues”, Johnny Blue Skies – Who once said, “Give someone a mask and see their true face”? A pseudonym barely concealing Sturgill Simpson gives just enough cover to tell his real desires to escape and start anew, carefree and uncool.

“Sea or War”, Robber Robber – Reminiscent perhaps of Preoccupations, Savages, Interpol - any number of cold, driving, brutal post-punk bands. Yet there’s something psychedelic about this one; Zone-out music for crumbling infrastructure and fading futures.
