“Baddy On The Floor”, Jamie xx and Honey Dijon – What a strange career James Smith has had. With the xx, he appeared with a perfect album. With his solo work, he appeared again with a perfect album. But he works on no one’s timetable but his own, letting brilliant tracks like this one appear just when they’re ready.

“MILLION DOLLAR BABY”, Tommy Richman – A couple of days after its its release, this song had three million plays. The next day, six. The next day, almost nine. Now? Over 200 million. Had you heard of Tommy Richman? Had anyone else? Where does unstoppable momentum like this come from?

“Espresso”, Sabrina Carpenter – It’s more fun when a great singer like Dua Lipa or Ariana Grande gets a track like this, but Carpenter doesn’t dull the Cerrone-like Eurodisco; Its rubberized bass, galvanized guitars, and aerosolized vocals scream precision engineering that only pop stars can muster.

“Comin’ Around Again”, Amber Mark – The great Amy Winehouse perfected the concoction of retro styles with modern lyricism. Amber Mark has her own take on this double vision: A beautiful, gospel voice singing about hooking up at the bar. 

“Hell Is Near”, St. Vincent – At points in her career, Annie Clark has fallen under the shadow of iconoclasm. Not just occupying such singularity herself, but wearing her idolatry (of David Bowie, or more recently Trent Reznor) on her sleeve. But her best work emerges when such referential reverence recedes to something all her own.

“Big Blue”, Hovvdy – Hovvdy want to be sweet, and maybe even are. Their comfort in sentiments vulnerable enough to risk being corny reveal a deeper worldview; the recognition that time is fleeting: “If I would only call him back. I don’t know why I don’t do that.” Sweetness grows sweeter in memory, but coolness grows cold.

“Going Insane”, The Bird Calls – Sam Sodomsky with drums, praise be. For so long, this natural lyricist welcomed his listeners into space whose privacy was proven by sparseness, captured in the external mic of his macbook. But now the curtains are drawing, the sunlight washing in.

“On Fire”, Idaho – Over three decades in, Jeff Martin’s slowcore finds new pastures, wide and rolling under low, gray skies, guitars shining like dewy blades of grass breathing like the cilia of the earth. “Lose yourself inside your head; break some records, break a sweat, before you’re fucking dead.”

“The Sediment of Creation”, Dean McPhee – Each track of McPhee’s song cycle to the spheres is arid and spare. Where Gustav Holst paid tribute to the solar system by painting the heroism of each planet’s namesake, McPhee’s depictions have the mysterious grandeur and silence of their true subjects.

“all and nothing”, tilt – Isabel Pardo, Kalia Vandever, and Carmen Quill each have beautiful voices, even as those voices find different forms, be it singing, upright bass, or trombone. Their linear harmony bends in and out of chords, sometimes dark and close, sometimes rising to glinting heights.
