I wrote it lying flat on my back in bed one night after going to write about a concert at the end of Meserole Avenue near the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Navigating a rowdy crowd alone, I collided with a drunk ticketholder who wheeled around, enraged, and threw his half-drank beer at me, bellowing - as you might have gathered if you’ve already heard the song - “Asshole! You spilled my drink!” I can still see him now: An unscrewed reveler at the rim of a little gaggle within the frothy throng; wild-eyed, bruised, furious.

In bed that night, I stared at my darkened ceiling playing the moment in my head slower and slower in my mind until I could see every frame. When I arrived at the space at the end, I imagined a guitar solo exploding like the plastic cup did on my back as I shimmied on through the crowd, a $9 Brooklyn Lager Supernova scintillating down my jacket as a crosseyed gaggle of goons reeled in my wake.

Later, in the studio, I told my lead guitarist Andrew Daly Frank I wanted an immolating giant for this solo, and he delivered as only he can. Andrew has caught every pass I’ve ever thrown him, but perhaps never as fantastically as this.

Before my forthcoming album Eternal Repeater began to coalesce thematically, I found its musical identity when I wrote “Mescarole”. I have been striving for a certain kind of downer/upper speedball ideal since my first single back in 2020, “California Days”: spacey and psychedelic on the top, with sustaining guitars swirling like clouds in a torrid sky, over Ben Wagner’s tight drums and Frank Meadows’s funky bass, a sixteenth-note undergirding driving the idea dauntlessly forward like a train over even slats. I made another strike here.

The riff and harmony here made me think of a certain kind of spooky, northern English folk; Nick Drake on Pink Moon, or the sound Jimmy Page or Roger Waters came up with when handed an acoustic guitar in an open tuning. I chased this enduring feel: dark, haunted, evil. I didn’t know then, but the invidiousness latent in this song, and the baseness of the interaction that inspired it, would serve as a seed for the album’s broader view of our entropic human capacity for rage, fear, and thoughtlessness.
