“In a Little Bit of Time”

I’m proud to announce the fourth and final single from “Eternal Repeater”, which is out Friday. It’s called “In a Little Bit of Time”.

I wrote these lyrics after courts handed down the $1.5 billion judgment to Alex Jones for the harm he caused the families of the children killed at Sandy Hook.

 No one forgets the 26 people killed at Sandy Hook, 20 of whom were seven years old or younger. I’ll never forget President Obama making his most impassioned speech in office, driven to tears, pleading with Congress to make even modest reforms. And the aftermath: The darkening hopelessness once tragedy followed tragedy and Sandy Hook became another in an endless pattern of bloodshed we’re cursed to behold and somehow withstand.

Then, horribly, a deranged kind of person crept into that bereaved community and, to seduce the eye of the paranoid and gullible, laid conspiracies upon it. It capitalized on that ill-gotten attention to sell snake oil: “Super Male Vitality” drops; “Lung Cleanse Plus Spray”; “Prostaguard” pills.

I see two explanations for this:

One, the internet’s mission to disseminate unfiltered information. At its most extreme end, it enables fabulists and conmen - gleeful provocateurs protected by keyboards - unqualified access to sympathetic audiences and “talk shit” without the real world’s moderating consequence of “get hit”.

Two, the ease of cashing in on this attention, which is rewarded on an absolute value scale. Those heartless enough to lie about dead children to contaminated onlookers are richly rewarded for it.

I couldn’t write a song about the children killed at Sandy Hook, or their parents’ grief, or the terror these tragedies’ recurrence has cast over even the most quotidian passages of our lives. In this song, I address the strain of individuals who harvest the helpless and heartbroken. The internet gave quarter to figures like Jones willing to spread lies about anyone, for any reason, and profit safely from the deluded.

Until they can’t. However smugly secure some feel behind their computers, they live in the real world. Real life catches up eventually. No con lives forever. Vote for people who will protect us from guns.
